Received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, in 1995, the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil, in 1997, and the Ph.D. degree in engineering from the École de Technologie Supérieure, University of Québec, Montréal, QC, Canada, in 2002. From 1996 to 1997, he was a research scientist at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the UFSC. From 1997 to 1998, he was a lecturer at the Federal Technological University of Parana (UTFPR). From 1998 to 2002, he was a visiting scientist at the Centre for Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence (CENPARMI), Montréal, QC, Canada. In 2003, he joined the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR), Curitiba, Brazil, where he became a professor in 2010 and served as chair of graduate studies in computer science from 2006 to 2008. From 2009 to 2015, he was also an associate professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Federal University of Parana (UFPR). In addition, he was a visiting researcher at the INESC-Porto, Portugal, from 2009 to 2012. In 2013 he served as a Fulbright Visiting Professor to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Columbia University in the City of New York, USA. In 2015, he joined the Department of Software and IT Engineering of the École de Technologie Supérieure - University of Québec, where he is currently an associate professor. Dr. Koerich is also co-founder of InviSys Machine Vision LLC., an R&D company that develops products based on machine learning and computer vision systems for retail and industrial applications. He was the CEO (2004-2010) and a Senior Research Scientist (2010-). In 2004, he was nominated an IEEE CS Latin America Distinguished Speaker.
